What Do I Do If I Put The Petrol In My Diesel Car?

Putting the wrong fuel in your car is easier than you might think, but what can you do about it?

First things first

  • Don’t start your engine.
  • Don’t try to fill up the rest of the fuel tank with diesel
  • Don’t panic

What you should do

Starting your engine when you have put the wrong fuel in your vehicle can damage it. Sometimes, it can cost thousands of pounds to replace damaged parts, which are rarely covered by insurance.

Once you’ve realised your mistake, immediately stop filling the tank. It might be tempting to try and correct the error by adding more diesel, but this won’t help. Instead, call for roadside assistance. If you’re still at the petrol station, it’s a good idea to inform the staff about the situation.

Most roadside assistance companies will drain the fuel from your tank and get you back on the road again within a few hours.
